Lucknow: A local court in Muzaffarnagar sentenced one person to life imprisonment for the murder of two hopeful Indian Army recruits from Gogwan village in Shamli district 10 years ago.
Babli alias Devi had received Rs 1.5 lakh each from Vishal Kumar and Vijay Kumar, both in their early 20s, after he promised them jobs in the military. However, he duped both and did not fulfill his promise, district government counsel Rajeev Sharma said.
When their dreams were shattered and the promised jobs never materialized, they demanded a refund. Babli lured them to an isolated spot under Nagar Kotwali police station on the pretext of settling the matter, only to shoot them dead. Their bodies were fished out of a village canal on November 24, 2013, triggering an investigation that eventually led to Babli’s arrest.
Following an investigation, the accused were apprehended and subsequently imprisoned for their roles in the youths’ murders. Additional district government counsel (ADGC) Kiran Pal Kashyap said, “After hearing both sides and examining witnesses and evidence, honourable additional district session judge Reema Malhotra, on Tuesday, sentenced Babli to life imprisonment.”
A case under IPC Section 302 (murder) was filed against Babli and his associate Sonu alias Sunil, leading to their arrest. “Both spent three years in jail and were then released on bail. During the court trial, due to a lack of evidence, Sonu was acquitted, while Babli was found guilty. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Babli,” Kashyap said.
