
Lucknow: Twelve people, including four women and one kid, died and five others were injured when a speeding tanker hit and fell on an auto-rickshaw carrying 17 passengers near Sukhpal Nagar-Mohanganj road under Leelapur police station of Pratapgarh on Monday, police said.
Upon being alerted, senior police and administrative officials rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations. The accident also affected vehicular movement and additional police force was deployed to clear the route.
While eight died on the spot four others succumbed during treatment.
As per initial police investigations, the incident took place when the speeding tanker coming from Lalganj direction hit the auto-rickshaw that was on its way to Jethwara. Locals told police that the driver of the tanker in an attempt to save a motorist lost control over the vehicle and first hit the auto-rickshaw and later tumbled upon it.
Police said five injured, including three men and one women, have been referred to SRN for treatment.
