SUV that mowed down restaurant worker in PGI belonged to retired DySP: Cops

Lucknow: A day after a 26-year-old man succumbed to injuries after being hit by an SUV, police investigation revealed that vehicle belong to a former deputy superintendent of police who had retired in 2019.

However, he had been using the insignia of Uttar Pradesh government and beacon on his vehicle in an unauthorized manner, police said.

A police team went to the residence of the former officer in Sarojininagar but he and his son were not there.

The victim, Karan Singh, 26, was hit by an SUV in Kalli Paschim locality on Rae Bareli road on July 4. He was admitted to Apex Trauma Centre of SGPGI.

Following Karan’s death, his family lodged an FIR at the SGPGI police station on Friday.

Victim’s mother Kamla Devi said, “My son used to work at a restaurant in the PGI police station area. On the fateful day, he was going on his two-wheeler. While he was turning towards Kalli Paschim, a speeding SUV bearing the insignia of UP government and red-blue beacon hit my son.”

Station house officer, PGI, RR Singh said that it was found that the accused was using beacon and official insignia on his personal vehicle even after his retirement. “Teams have been formed to arrest the accused. It is not clear as to who was on the wheels when the accident took place,” he said.
