Lucknow: A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) youth wing leader, Amit Thakur, was relieved from his post of district vice-president in Farrukhabad district for “tarnishing the party’s image.” The action came after a video of him allegedly threatening and hurling abuses at a sub-inspector (SI) surfaced on social media.
In the purported video, while addressing two police officials, Thakur said, “This isn’t Mulayam Singh’s government. This is BJP’s government. I can make you disappear… Do you know who I am?”
The altercation took place after SI Surjeet Singh sought information over a clash and subsequent firing between two groups of men engaged in illegal mining. Thakur represented one group of illegal miners, police said.
After the video was circulated widely on social media, the saffron party, taking cognisance, issued a press release stating that Thakur was being relieved from his post “for indiscipline as well as ruining the party’s reputation.”
Meanwhile, based on the complaint filed by Singh, an FIR was registered against Thakur and a few others. SP Farrukhabad, Vikas Kumar, said, “The accused men are absconding as of now. The special operations group has been tasked to arrest them. We have announced a bounty of Rs 25,000 on Thakur and Rs 15,000 each on three other accused.”
The SP added that the men were booked under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and sections of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013.
