Girls on way to coaching in dense fog hit by train in Jalaun, 1 dead

Lucknow: On the way to attend their coaching classes, two teenage girls were hit by a train as they were crossing the tracks in UP’s Jalaun on Saturday morning. One of the injured, Kajol (17), was declared dead at hospital. Her friend Varsha (18), who was critically injured, is undergoing treatment. Police said the two girls were apparently unable to assess the distance and speed of the approaching train due to dense fog.

On receiving information, local people informed the police and admitted the injured girls to the medical college in Orai. Body of Kajol, who was declared dead at the hospital, was sent for postmortem.

Kajol, a resident of Aer village of Jalaun, was a high school student. Varsha, also in high school and a native of Muskara, lives with her aunt in Indira Nagar locality of Orai.

Dr Rajesh Kumar Maurya, principal of Orai Medical College, said that the critically injured girl has been referred to Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College in Kanpur.

Orai Kotwali police station inspector Virendra Kumar Patel said the unfortunate incident took place at 6.30am. “There was dense fog at that time, due to which the girls could not see the approaching train and were hit by it. The deceased’s family members, who stay in Aer village under Dakor police station of the district, were informed and have arrived to take the body,” Patel said.
