4 die, 2 injured as car plunges into Agra canal

Lucknow: Four people died while two suffered injuries after the multi-utility vehicle in which they were travelling fell into a canal late Friday night in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra district.

According to police, there were six passengers in the Ertiga returning from a wedding. The injured passengers are being treated at a private hospital.

“On Friday evening, a speeding car with six passengers fell into a canal. The incident happened on Digner Road under Tajganj police station limits,” Suraj Kumar Rai, deputy commissioner of police, said.

Vinod Singh (42), his nephew Jitendra Singh (32), his neighbour Manish Jha (33), and Shailendra Singh (30) died. They were all residents of Mohanlal village under Shamshabad block and were farmers.

Lal Singh (34) and Gopi (17), were rescued by local residents.

According to locals, the car overturned after it fell into the canal and water seeped in. The submerged car’s central locking system impeded the occupants’ escape. By the time the villagers went into the canal and broke the windshield and window glasses with bricks, four people had died.
