Lucknow: Four members of a family died and eight others were critically injured after a portion of the roof of their under-construction house collapsed amid heavy rainfall in Bulandshahr in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to police, the incident took place around 2:45 am at Mawai village in Narsena area when the 12 family members were asleep. They were trapped under debris. The victims were rescued by police and NDRF with the help of locals after a five-hour-long operation, said officials.
The deceased were identified as the house owner Rajpal Singh (52), a farmer, his wife Sunita (50), and their sons Kuldeep Singh (25) and Dharmendra Kumar (19). Those injured in the incident were identified as Rajpal’s son Dalchand Singh (29), his wife Chhoti, sister-in-law Babita and five children of the family — Labish, Yogita, Kartik, Rinku, and Hitesh.
Dalchand, who works as a daily wager in Noida, said “I returned home from Noida on Tuesday and got to know that a fresh lintel (iron structure that supports the ceiling) was laid on the first floor of the house the same day. We were all sleeping when the roof collapsed on us.”
Bulandshahr DM Chandra Prakash Singh said the lintel could not bear the weight of the water that had accumulated on the roof following heavy rain. “We were informed of the incident around 4 am, and a rescue operation was launched immediately. Four bodies were pulled out of the debris while eight persons were rescued. The injured were admitted to a governmenthospital and are out of danger,” he said.
UP CM Yogi Adityanath has ordered financial aid of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of the deceased. “We are working to provide every possible support to the family,” said the officials.
