
Lucknow: The special investigation team (SIT) set up to investigate the murders of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his younger brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf on April 15 in the city, submitted a chargesheet against the 3 assailants accused in the case on Thursday.
The 3 accused against whom the chargesheet has been submitted are Lavlesh Tiwari, 22, Mohit Singh alias Shani, 23, and Arun Maurya, 18. They are at present lodged in the Pratapgarh district jail.
Gulab Chandra Agrahi, district government counsel (criminal), said the SIT submitted a chargesheet before the chief judicial magistrate (CJM), Dinesh Kumar Gautam, after completing its investigation under Section 302 (murder) and several other sections of the IPC and the Arms Act.
At one stage, the SIT team had taken the trio for police remand to question them over the murders of Atiq and Ashraf in order to collect all possible evidence.
The 3 accused shot dead the Ahmed brothers on the night of April 15 at 10 pm when they were being taken for a medical examination at Colvin hospital of Prayagraj as a mandatory legal requirement. The entire episode was caught live on media cameras.
The 3 assailants posed as journalists and shot Atiq and Ashraf at point-blank range and then surrendered to the police present there.
