2 kids drown in pit dug by brick kiln owner in Rampur

Lucknow: Two boys, aged 14 and 15, who had gone out to play on Tuesday afternoon and went missing were found dead in a large pit of about 10-ft deep dug by a brick kiln owner near a railway crossing at Milak in UP’s Rampur district, police said on Thursday. This is the third such incident in the district in a week with four deaths of minors reported on July 6 and 7.

In the latest incident, the cousins — children of labourers — went to play in the pit, filled with rain water, and their bodies were found 18 hours later, police added. The victims were later identified as Vishesh Kumar (15) and his cousin Prince Goswami (14), both Milak residents.

After recovering some of their clothes from under a tree near the pit, the family approached Milak SDM, Abhineet Kumar, at his bungalow on Tuesday night to carry out an immediate search operation, but no one responded, a victim’s kin claimed. He added that “they didn’t even open the gates for them”.

The bodies of the cousins were found on Wednesday afternoon by professional divers, and handed over to their families after autopsy. The autopsy stated that the two kids had died of drowning sometime on Tuesday.
