Lucknow: Four persons were killed, and five others sustained injuries after an Uttar Pradesh State Roads Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) hit an e-rickshaw from the rear in Safdarganj police station on Barabanki-Ayodhya Highway in Barabanki district on Wednesday.
The e-rickshaw also got stuck in the bus and was dragged for several meters.
The driver who tried to escape was taken into custody by the police. All the eight victims were passengers of the ill-fated e-rickshaw.
SHO, Safdarganj, Brajesh Kumar Verma said eight people from Panditpurwa boarded an e-rickshaw to attend last rites of one Virendra in Chhabka Ka Purwa area of Safdarganj.
“While returning, they reached near Godari area, when the roadways bus rammed the e-rickshaw from behind. After the accident, the e-rickshaw got stuck in the bus. The onlookers ran for rescue and tried to stop the bus, and finally came to a grinding halt hitting a tree on roadside” said the police. In the meantime, others informed the police control room UP 112.
“A police team reached the spot first nabbed the driver and then rescued the passengers from the mangled pieces of the e-rickshaw,” said Verma.
Passenger on e-rickshaw Bindra (50), wife of Kallu had died on the spot, while others were taken to the district hospital where Vijay Bahadur (50), Chandra (60), and Pinki (38) were declared dead.
While, others Vijay Kumari (45), Mithailal (60), Kallu (58), Mayarani (40) and Rajkumari (40) were referred to KGMU Trauma center in Lucknow.
Doctors at KGMU said that all the injured were critical but stable.
