Eight ABVP students arrested for attacking DDU VC

Lucknow: The Gorakhpur police on Saturday arrested eight students affiliated to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for allegedly assaulting Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University VC Prof Rajesh Singh and ransacking his office on Friday.

The students were demanding to meet the VC regarding various demands since Friday morning but as the VC tried to move out instead of meeting them, they created a ruckus.

The FIR was lodged on the complaint of Proctor Satya Pal Singh.

“It was alleged that the group of students led by Sanjeev Tripathi, Arpit Kausudhan, Piyush Mishra, Deepak Kumar along with others and some former students and a contractor Piyush Singh, misbehaved with the VC and other officials after they barged into the administrative block of the university where they ransacked the furniture, window panes and flower vases. The irate students locked the VC, finance officer, registrar, controller and other officials in the VC office,” the FIR stated.

The complainant said the students manhandled the VC again when he was being escorted to a safe place by police.

“When the registrar was leaving the scene, some of them manhandled him during which he fell and suffered injuries,” Singh said.

The complainant further said the accused students attacked the registrar with some blunt object.

“The official began bleeding but the attackers kept on assaulting him,” he said.

“He has suffered injuries in head and other parts of body. He had recently undergone a heart procedure,” Singh said.

SHO, Cantonment, Randhir Mishra, said an FIR under sections of IPC 147 (rioting), 342 (punishment for confinement), 323 (punishment for causing hurt) as well as provisions of Criminal Law Amendment Act has been lodged against 22 persons.

“We are hunting for 14 other named accused in the case,” said Mishra.
