Car ploughs through women’s group in Jhansi, four dead

Three Injured In Critical Condition

Lucknow: At least four women were killed and four injured when a speeding car ploughed through a group walking by the roadside on Jhansi-Kanpur highway late Thursday evening in Chirgaon on the outskirts of the city. Two of the victims got entangled in the car’s front grille and were dragged for over a hundred meters.

Police said the victims were returning home from the farms in village Gulara. As they were walking on the roadside, a white car bearing the registration number of Madhya Pradesh ran them over.

The impact was so severe that a few of them were thrown to the nearby fields while two of them got stuck on the bonnet of the car and were dragged for around a 100 meters before the car skidded on the roadside and stopped.

The passers-by rushed for the rescue while some of them caught the driver who was trying to escape. Meanwhile, the police arrived and it was found that two of the victims who were dragged with the car had died on the spot. The other victims were rushed to the Jhansi medical college, where one more was declared dead while the fourth succumbed to injuries on Friday during treatment, police said.

The deceased have been identified as Saroj (28), Suman (34), Rinki (35) and Kiran (35). The remaining four are undergoing treatment at a private hospital. The condition of three was still critical.

While the onlookers claimed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol, the police are waiting for the medical report.

As per Moth CO, Laxmikant Gautam, the accused has been identified as Zubair, hailing from Durga Colony, Guna in MP. He has been sent to jail after being booked under Sections 338 (grievous hurt through act of negligence), 279 (negligent driving), 304A (causing death by negligence) of IPC.
