Amarmani, wife walk out of jail; SC refuses to stay release

Lucknow: UP’s former minister Amarmani Tripathi and his wife Madhumani, awarded life sentence in poet Madhumita Shukla murder case, walked out of prison on Friday evening, a day after the prison department ordered their release.

Gorakhpur jail authorities completed the formalities at the hospital where the couple has been admitted for a better part of their sentence.

Earlier, the Supreme Court refused to stay the Tripathis’ early release on a plea by Madhumita’s sister Nidhi, but asked the state government and the couple to file their replies within eight weeks.

Nidhi said she had faith in the court, but added that Amarmani “has a lot of clout and resources”, and she and her family members might be killed.

Questioning the grounds cited for their early release, she said: “Since 2013, the two have been continuously staying in the hospital where they have been enjoying five-star facilities. They have not been to jail in the last 10 years. How can they be released on grounds of good conduct in jail?”
