In commemoration of the memory of ‘Mother Mary,’ whose birth is celebrated on September 8th, the ‘Mount Mary Festival,’ also known as the ‘Bandra Fair,’ is observed at the ‘Mount Mary Church,’ alternatively known as the ‘Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount’ in Bandra, Mumbai.
This vibrant festival kicks off every year on the first Sunday following September 8th, which is recognized as the birthday of the ‘Virgin Mary.’ In 2023, the ‘Mount Mary Fair’ is scheduled to take place from September 10th to September 17th.
Historical Roots of the Mount Mary Church in Bandra
The origins of this church trace back to 1570 AD when Portuguese priests were believed to have erected the original chapel. These priests are credited with the transportation of the sacred statuette to this location.
In 1700 AD, the statue was replaced with an effigy of ‘Our Lady of Navigators.’ Subsequently, the church underwent refurbishments and reconstruction in 1761 AD.
Nevertheless, the original statue continues to be venerated, transcending time and restoration. Hindus, Christians, and residents of the Koli community in this area hold profound faith in this icon, firmly believing that their earnest prayers will receive divine answers.
Significance of the Mount Mary Church
The Mount Mary Church holds profound significance for Christians, being regarded as one of their most sacred sites. The Kolis of Bandra affectionately refer to this statue as ‘Moti Mauli’ in Marathi, signifying ‘Pearl Mother.’ At the heart of this church in Bandra, one finds an image of Mother Mary cradling the infant Jesus.
Festive Celebrations
The Mount Mary Festival has been a tradition for over three centuries. It unfolds within the precincts of the Mount Mary Church and the adjacent lanes, resembling a carnival replete with games, concerts, and amusement rides.
Throughout the festival, stalls offer a rich array of culinary delights reflecting both Goan and Maharashtrian cultures. These stalls also tempt visitors with sweets, homemade cakes, fudges, chikki, and various other delectables. In previous years, the fair has featured up to 430 stalls selling items such as candles, flowers, food, toys, and artificial jewelry.
The Mount Mary Festival transcends religious boundaries, drawing a diverse crowd of people from various faiths and communities.
