Congress Labels Women’s Reservation Bill as Election Rhetoric and Disappointment for Women’s Aspirations

The Congress party has strongly criticized the women’s reservation bill introduced by the government, deeming it as “election rhetoric” and a “massive letdown for the aspirations of women.” The party pointed out that the government has specified that the reservation will only be implemented after conducting a Census and delimitation exercise following the bill’s enactment.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh questioned whether the Census and delimitation would be completed before the 2024 elections, highlighting that the Narendra Modi government has yet to carry out the 2021 decadal Census.

In a social media post, Jairam Ramesh remarked, “In a season dominated by election rhetoric, this one stands out as the most significant! It is a profound disappointment for millions of Indian women and girls.” “As previously highlighted, the Modi government has not conducted the 2021 Decadal Census, making India the sole G20 country that has not fulfilled this obligation. Now, it announces that women’s reservations will only be enforced following the initial decadal Census conducted AFTER the Women’s Reservation Bill becomes law. When will this Census occur?” Ramesh inquired.
