Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to Narges Mohammadi of Iran

citation, the committee stated, “The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize to Narges Mohammadi for her tireless efforts against the oppression of women in Iran and her unwavering commitment to promoting human rights and freedom for all.”

Narges Mohammadi is a prominent human rights activist in Iran known for her advocacy for women’s rights and the abolition of the death penalty. She has faced multiple sentences in Tehran’s Evin Prison, totaling approximately 12 years of imprisonment, according to the Front Line Defenders rights organization. These imprisonments were the result of various periods of detention on charges such as spreading propaganda against the state.

From a pool of 351 candidates, including 259 individuals and 92 organizations, Mohammadi emerged as the laureate of the world’s most prestigious peace prize.

Her name now joins the esteemed ranks of Nobel Peace Prize laureates such as Mother Teresa, former US President Jimmy Carter, and the International Campaign to Ban Landmines.
