‘Many’ AMU students booked for pro-Palestine rally

Lucknow: An FIR was registered against several students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) for taking out a march on the campus on Sunday evening in support of Palestine and against Israel after the latter launched an offensive against Palestinians in retaliation to Saturday’s missile attacks by Hamas militants that has left more than 1,300 people dead so far.

The protesting students raised slogans and carried posters and banners that read “We stand with Palestine”, “AMU stands with Palestine”, etc. The FIR has named five protesters while maintaining that many who are yet to be identified have been booked too.

Aligarh police said the students were booked under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion), 188 (deliberate disobedience of an order duly promulgated by a public servant), 505 (publishing or circulating any statement or report containing rumor) of the IPC at the Civil Lines police station on Monday.

Superintendent of police (city) Mirgank Shekhar Pathak said, “Several people held a protest march without permission and raised inflammatory slogans. A case under relevant sections of the IPC has been registered. We are probing the matter and action will be taken accordingly.”
