
Lucknow: The Government Railway Police (GRP), Varanasi junction on Monday recovered foreign currency notes of several countries worth over Rs 1.80 crore and nabbed a youth of Balrampur district in this connection.
DSP Kunwar Prabhat Singh and GRP Varanasi Junction in-charge Hemant Singh said in view of massive crowding on New Year day, GRP teams were carrying out checking drives, when a youth identified as Sandeep Kumar of Mathura Bazar in Balrampur district was intercepted. When the cops checked his bag, currency notes of US, Thailand, Japan, China, Australia, Malaysia, Russia, Hongkong and other countries were recovered, said GRP adding that total value of the recovered notes was Rs 1,84,29,984.
As Kunwar failed to produce any satisfactory document in support of the currency notes, he was detained. Enforcement Directorate, Customs, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and ATS have also been alerted for further investigation, the DSP said.
