Lucknow: Three members of a family suffocated to death after inhaling smoke from a brazier (angithi) in a closed room in the Juhi area here, officials said. Sources said the incident occured while they were asleep on late Sunday night. The police sent the bodies for post-mortem.
South Kanpur DCP Ravindra Kumar said, “The victims were found asleep, with the angithi still burning. It’s possible that they decided against putting out the fire to keep themselves warm in the biting cold but ended up suffocating after inhaling the toxic fumes. Prima facie, it seems the family sealed the doors and windows tightly. It’s unfortunate that three lives were lost in this incident. It appears that they died in their sleep.”
A police team, led by the DCP surveyed the scene and collected evidence. “Two other family members, who survived, were admitted to a hospital. Senior police officials are involved in the ongoing investigation into this incident,” the DCP added.
