BHU rampage after ‘hit and run’ death

Lucknow:  BHU turned into an arson arena late Saturday night after an SUV allegedly ran over a labourer, with irate hostellers raining bricks on cops, fighting staffers, damaging varsity vehicles and trying to storm the V-C’s residence.

Two cases have been filed, one against the unidentified SUV owner over the death of Krishna Chand (48), and another against 200-odd people over the violence, ACP Anjan Tripathi said Sunday.

Chand was returning home on a bicycle after meeting his mother-in-law, a staffer, when he was knocked down near Dalmia hostel around 9pm.

After a grievously injured Chand fell on the road, someone in the SUV tried to drag him inside. But the hostel inmates arrived soon, prompting those in the SUV to flee, leaving the vehicle behind. Chandra was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The rampage began soon after, spreading to the BHU main gate in Varanasi’s Lanka area. Senior officers tried to convince the protesters to return to their hostels, assuring them that the driver and owner of the killer vehicle would be nabbed soon.

However, as they continued their protest and tried to break into the V-C residence, more forces were deployed on the campus. The cops had to work over two hours to pacify the protesters. On Sunday, Chandra’s relatives protested for compensation, relenting only after officials assured them of all possible help.
