Gujarat: AMTS bus collides with three vehicles, two injured

Ahmedabad, Jan 23 (IANS) A collision involving an Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) bus and three other vehicles near Gota Ceramic Market here on Friday, left two individuals injured and caused extensive damage to the vehicles involved, officials said.

According to AMTS officials, the bus, reportedly travelling at a high speed, lost control near a busy road intersection close to the ceramic market.

The bus first struck a school van before hitting an autorickshaw and a truck tempo, triggering a chain reaction.

The school van’s front section was severely damaged, while the truck tempo overturned into a roadside construction pit.

Eyewitnesses described the crash as severe and expressed concerns over road safety in the area.

“Thankfully, no children were inside the school van at the time, and there were no fatalities. Passengers and children in the van were unharmed. AMTS will repair the tempo involved in the accident,” a senior official said.

Local residents claimed the bus driver appeared to lose control as other vehicles attempted lane changes near the intersection.

Social media videos showed the bus moving at high speed just before the collisions.

The school van driver and the autorickshaw driver sustained serious injuries and were immediately taken to a hospital for treatment.

Traffic police and AMTS personnel responded swiftly, clearing the road and restoring traffic within a short time.

Following the incident, AMTS has initiated disciplinary measures.

“A notice has been issued to the operator, and the driver has been suspended with immediate effect,” an official said.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) also imposed a Rs 50,000 fine on the bus operator, Chartered Speed Company, for violating operational norms, including speed regulations.

Similar cases involving AMTS buses have been reported in recent months.

On January 19, an AMTS bus caught fire on SG Highway near Sola Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, forcing a swift evacuation, though no one was injured.

In September last year, a 69-year-old man was run over and killed by an AMTS bus near Rupali parking as he lost his footing close to the vehicle.

In July, an AMTS bus in the Jamalpur area rammed into a streetlight pole and landed on a road divider after the driver lost control, injuring the driver and damaging the bus.
