Bakrid: Rapid Response Teams to ensure animal welfare, sanitation in Delhi

New Delhi, May 27 (IANS) Ahead of Bakrid celebrations, the Delhi government has intensified monitoring and enforcement measures across the national capital by deploying Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) under the Animal Husbandry Unit to ensure compliance with government guidelines related to animal welfare, sacrifice and public sanitation, officials said on Wednesday.

The action has been initiated at the direction of Delhi Development Minister Kapil Mishra. On Tuesday, inspections were carried out in various markets and localities across North-West, North-East, North, Central, South-West and West districts of Delhi.

Officials said the teams also conducted awareness drives among residents, livestock owners, animal traders and transporters regarding the advisory issued by the Delhi government in connection with Bakrid-related activities.

During the inspections, the RRTs informed people that strict legal action would be taken in cases involving violations of the prescribed guidelines concerning transportation, sale, purchase and management of animals.

According to officials, the teams appealed to citizens, livestock owners and traders to fully comply with all government instructions regarding animal care, transportation and authorised practices during the festival period.

Kapil Mishra stated that Rapid Response Teams have been constituted in all 13 districts of Delhi under the supervision of district in-charges and deputy directors.

He said the teams had been tasked with monitoring regional activities, inspecting transportation and handling of animals, ensuring adherence to animal welfare norms and taking immediate action in the event of any violations.

The Minister said the Delhi government’s advisory clearly specifies that no illegal sacrifice of any kind would be permitted during Bakrid celebrations.

Officials stated that the advisory also prohibits the sale and purchase of animals at public places across the city.

“Sacrifice can only take place at authorised locations. Sacrifices should not be carried out on roads, lanes or other public places. Special care must also be taken to ensure that the sacrifice of cows, calves and camels remains completely prohibited,” officials said.

Authorities further emphasised that animals should not be subjected to cruelty during transportation and handling.

“No cruelty should be inflicted upon animals during transportation. The sale of meat at unlicensed locations is strictly prohibited. Blood and remains should not be allowed to flow into drains or public sewerage systems. In case of any complaint or information, citizens may contact the nearest police station or PCR,” officials added.

The Delhi government has also appealed to the public to cooperate fully with the Rapid Response Teams and local authorities during the festival period to ensure peaceful celebrations and strict compliance with all advisories and regulations issued by the administration.
