When Gary Oldman revealed why he turned down ‘Edward Scissorhands’

Los Angeles, July 3 (IANS) Veteran actor Gary Oldman once spoke about why he turned down ‘Edward Scissorhands’. An old video of the actor has resurfaced on the Internet, and it shows him talking about not relating with the source material of the film.

He said, “I’ve turned a few things down. I can’t say I regret it, but I couldn’t mention them. I can tell you one story about ‘Edward Scissorhands’. I read the script and I went, it’s ridiculous, there’s a castle at the end of this road and then an Avon lady comes around selling makeup and this kid’s got scissors hands. This is nuts, I don’t get this at all. And ended up not doing it”.

He further mentioned, “I just said, ‘I don’t get it’. Then of course, they cast Johnny Depp, and Tim Burton was relatively unknown at that time too. So that was another unknown sort of commodity. And I go and see the movie and the camera pans over these multi-coloured houses in this very sort of suburban neighborhood and then you see the sort of Dracula castle on the hill. Literally two minutes in, I went, yeah, ‘I get it. I get it’. I just got it too late”.

‘Edward Scissorhands’ tells the story of an artificial man left unfinished by his inventor, leaving him with scissors instead of hands. When he is welcomed into a suburban community, Edward struggles to fit in despite his gentle nature and remarkable artistic talents. Blending fantasy, romance, and social commentary, the film explores themes of loneliness, acceptance, prejudice, and individuality. The film has become one of Tim Burton’s most beloved and enduring works.
