Varanasi, July 24 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Senior Divisional Materials Manager (Sr DMM) of the North Eastern Railway (NER) in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1.70 lakh, officials said on Friday.
According to a CBI statement, the agency registered a case on July 23 based on a complaint lodged by the proprietor of a Government e-Marketplace (GeM)-registered private firm.
The complainant alleged that his company had supplied furniture worth Rs 9.47 lakh to the office of the Sr DMM, NER, Varanasi, between February and June 2026 and had received only part of the payment for the supplies.
The complaint further alleged that the railway officer demanded illegal gratification of Rs 1.70 lakh on July 15 in exchange for processing pending payments and facilitating future payments owed to the firm.
The accused, the CBI said, was also alleged to have threatened the complainant with denial of future contracts if the bribe demand was not met.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap on July 23 and allegedly caught the officer red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of Rs 1.70 lakh.
Following the operation, the accused public servant was arrested and produced before a competent court in Lucknow. The court remanded him to judicial custody until August 7.
The CBI said further investigation into the case is underway.
In another case, a special CBI Court in Ghaziabad on Friday convicted and sentenced the then manager of a gramin bank branch in Meerut to four years’ imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10,000 in a 10-year-old bribery case.
Umesh Kumar Singhal, Branch Manager, Sarva UP Gramin Bank, Branch- Machhra, Meerut, had taken a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a loan applicant, the CBI official said.
