Kolkata, July 25 (IANS) Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar on Saturday supported the statement of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari in the West Bengal Assembly on Saturday that no one will be spared who created unrest during the procession organised by the Left parties in Kolkata.
Speaking to media persons, Majumdar said, “Those who were leading the procession called by the Left from the beginning on Friday, could not lead it till the end. The unrest started before it reached near Dorina Crossing. Those who started the journey from Sealdah could not lead it till the end.”
The Union Minister alleged about Friday’s procession that journalists were attacked in the procession and several others were harassed.
He said that a woman journalist contacted him over phone on Friday.
The journalist said that when she was being harassed, several women present there saved her. Otherwise, she might have been molested there.
It is alleged that obscene gestures were made upon seeing the woman journalist at the rally.
“Those who committed this act yesterday are not students. I can guarantee that they are not even close to the qualifications required to appear for the NEET exam. Our Chief Minister has made it clear that no one will be given any concessions. No one will get any exemption. The Anti-Goon Act will show the consequences for indulging in hooliganism.”
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Ritabrata Banerjee has strongly condemned the attack on the media persons during the student protest in Esplanade area in Kolkata on Friday.
He visited the injured journalists at SSKM Hospital and demanded strict legal action against the culprits.
Saying that such attacks on the media are unacceptable, Ritabrata Banerjee demanded a speedy punishment for the culprits.
Multiple cases have been registered in various police stations of Kolkata in this incident and the police have started identifying the accused by looking at the CCTV footage.
On Friday, various student organisations of the Left Front held a protest march against the NEET-UG exam paper leak.
Thousands of people participated in this march. During the protest at Dorina Crossing in Esplanade, a chaotic situation suddenly arose. A scuffle broke out between the police and the protesters and bricks and stones were hurled at the police; the police had to resort to cane charge to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, journalists and cameramen of various media outlets were injured.
Earlier on Saturday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari condemned the attack on journalists.
The Chief Minister said that such strict action will be taken against those involved in this incident that their future generations will also remember it.
