AIIB eyes strategic investment partnership in meeting with CM Satheesan

Thiruvananthapuram, July 29 (IANS) The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) on Wednesday expressed interest in forging a long-term strategic investment partnership with Kerala, signalling the possibility of fresh investments across infrastructure, climate resilience, transport, water security and the state’s ambitious blue economy programme.

An AIIB delegation called on Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and held detailed discussions on aligning the Bank’s future investments with Kerala’s development priorities.

The talks focused on creating a structured pipeline of infrastructure projects that could attract AIIB funding over the coming years.

A key focus of the discussions was Mission Samudra, the state’s proposed integrated blue economy initiative covering fisheries, ports, inland waterways, maritime logistics, coastal infrastructure, tourism, and skill development.

The AIIB indicated its willingness to explore investments in the programme through an integrated financing model.

The delegation also identified water security as another priority area, discussing potential investments in irrigation modernisation, integrated water resource management, dam safety, and flood resilience.

Officials said these proposals could build on the Bank’s ongoing engagement through the Resilient Kerala Programme and the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP-2).

The AIIB noted that Kerala’s emphasis on green infrastructure, climate resilience, urban transformation, connectivity and technology-driven development closely aligns with the bank’s Strategy 2030, making the state a strong candidate for expanded financial support.

The bank is already associated with several flagship projects in Kerala, including Kochi Metro Phase II (Pink Line), the Kerala Solid Waste Management Project, the Resilient Kerala Programme, and DRIP-2.

AIIB officials said these projects have laid the groundwork for broadening cooperation into sectors such as renewable energy, healthcare, education, urban infrastructure, and state highways.

Chief Minister Satheesan welcomed the AIIB’s continued interest in Kerala, stating that the state remains committed to sustainable, climate-resilient, and inclusive growth.

He said future proposals would be taken forward in line with the government’s development priorities and the approval procedures prescribed by the Centre.

Both sides agreed to continue consultations to identify priority projects and prepare a structured investment pipeline for consideration in the coming months.
