July 1 | All I could see was the T20 WC flying away

Suryakumar Yadav reflected on his crucial catch that helped India secure their first ICC title in 11 years. Displaying remarkable composure, Suryakumar caught David Miller’s shot near the boundary, a pivotal moment in the T20 World Cup final. His incredible effort shifted the momentum in India’s favor, leading to a 7-run victory and their second T20 World Cup trophy.

In the final over, with South Africa needing 16 runs, Hardik Pandya was given the ball. He delivered a low full-toss that Miller attempted to hit for a six. However, Suryakumar was perfectly positioned near the boundary. He managed to juggle the ball, ensuring he stayed within the field of play, and completed one of the most significant catches in Indian cricket history.

Suryakumar described the moment, saying, “All I could see was the World Cup flying away, and I just latched on to it.” His catch not only dismissed Miller but also earned him the ‘Best Fielder’ medal from BCCI secretary Jay Shah.

The Indian fielding coach highlighted Suryakumar’s dedication, noting that he had practiced such catches extensively. He praised Suryakumar’s awareness and decision-making, emphasizing the importance of his presence of mind during such a high-pressure moment.
