Guwahati, July 23 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday visited flood-hit areas of Golaghat district, reviewed rescue and relief operations, and assured affected families that the government would ensure the timely supply of all essential assistance as the state continued to grapple with the aftermath of the recent floods.
The Chief Minister inspected relief camps at Bhaskar Senior Basic School in Kamarbandha and Numaligarh Higher Secondary School, where displaced families have been provided shelter.
At the Kamarbandha camp, housing 178 flood-affected people, Sarma interacted with inmates to assess their daily needs and directed the district administration and concerned departments to address all essential requirements on priority.
At the Numaligarh camp, where 182 people, including a large number of children, are staying, the Chief Minister spent time interacting with children and enquired about their well-being.
According to official figures, the recent floods have affected 25,791 people in Golaghat district.
Speaking to reporters after the visit, Sarma said the floods had caused widespread hardship, damaging agricultural fields, affecting livestock and disrupting the lives of thousands of families.
He said the state government was making every effort to provide adequate relief and rehabilitation support to all those impacted.
The Chief Minister also said Union Home Minister Amit Shah had spoken to him over the phone to review the flood situation in Assam.
According to Sarma, the Union Home Minister informed him that an inter-ministerial central team would soon visit the state to carry out a comprehensive assessment of flood-related damage and evaluate the assistance required from the Centre for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts.
The visit comes as the Assam government continues to monitor the flood situation closely while intensifying relief measures in affected districts and coordinating with the Centre for additional support.
