Australia Supports India and Japan for Permanent UNSC Membership

During her address at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong called for reforms within the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and expressed Australia’s support for India and Japan to become permanent members of the UNSC.

Wong emphasized the need for greater permanent and non-permanent representation for Africa, Latin America, and Asia while also advocating for constraints on the use of the veto by permanent members. She underlined Australia’s commitment to peace and security, citing their pursuit of a seat in the Security Council for the year 2029-30 as part of this commitment.
