Catania Airport closure follows Mount Etna eruption, leading to flight disruptions

The eruption’s impact comes just ahead of Italy’s major bank holiday.Sicilian travel routes have been severely affected by the eruption of Mount Etna, which occurred on Sunday evening. The vast majority of flights scheduled to depart from or arrive at Catania Airport have been grounded. Officials from the airport have announced that operations are expected to resume at 8pm today.

Known as Europe’s most active volcano, Mount Etna has prompted Italian authorities to declare a “pre-alert” phase, signifying its transition from warning level F0 to F1.
