CCTV footages help police arrest ‘rapist’

Lucknow: A man, who allegedly raped a 35-year-old woman, a resident of Kaushambi, after drugging her and later dumping her at 1090 locality in Hazratganj on Saturday night, was arrested on Sunday.

The accused, identified as Mayank Bhanu Singh (22) of Sitapur, had befriended the woman by offering her the support which she needed in pursuing a court case. “CCTV cameras installed in the area helped the police in arresting the miscreant,” DCP, central zone, Aparna Rajat Kaushik said.

The woman was found lying unconscious at 1090 locality on Saturday by passers-by who immediately reported the matter to the police. In the initial statement, the woman told the PRV team that she was starving for two days and had fallen unconscious due to weakness. She was rushed to a government hospital.

The DCP said that the woman met the accused when she visited the city in connection with a court case. “After winning her confidence the accused told her that he knew some senior government officers who could be of great help to her. He also claimed to have good connections in city courts,” the DCP said, adding that the accused accompanied her for about two days. He then took her to a hotel, administer her some drugs and raped her, the police officer added.
