CNN names former New York Times CEO Mark Thompson as its chief

Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of CNN, has announced the appointment of Mark Thompson as the upcoming CEO and chairman of the cable news network. This selection follows the recent departure of Chris Licht.

Mark Thompson has a distinguished career, having previously held the positions of president and CEO at The New York Times from 2012 to 2020, as well as director-general of the BBC from 2004 to 2012. He is poised to assume his responsibilities at CNN starting from October 9, as conveyed to CNN staff members through an internal memo.

In a message to the company’s staff, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav expressed his confidence in Thompson’s capabilities and affirmed that he is the ideal leader to guide CNN through this crucial juncture. Zaslav also acknowledged the dedication and excellence of CNN’s personnel, emphasizing their significant role in the network’s strength and success.
