Legendary lyricist Gopaldas Neeraj, who gave many evergreen songs to Bollywood, may not be in this world today, but his brilliant work has immortalized him. Gopaldas Neeraj was born on 4 January 1925 in Etawah, Uttar Pradesh. At the age of just six, Neeraj lost his father Brajkishore Saxena. After getting his primary education from the village, Neeraj did his MA in Hindi literature in 1953. Got the degree. At the same time, due to financial problems, he started working from the 12th standard itself. Neeraj started teaching as a Hindi lecturer in Meerut College, but left the job on his own due to allegations made by the college administration. After this he was appointed Professor of Hindi Department in Dharma Samaj College, Aligarh and settled in Maris Road Janakpuri Aligarh. Neeraj also went to jail in the year 1942 for Quit India movement.
Gopaldas Neeraj used the magic of his poetry in such a way that his presence became mandatory in every Kavi Sammelan. Not only this, the popularity of Kavi Sammelans attracted Neeraj towards Mayanagari Mumbai. Neeraj gave excellent compositions to the Hindi film world. However, in the end he did not feel like anywhere, and he came back to Aligarh. As per reports, Neeraj gave 10 years to Hindi cinema.

In 10 years, Gopaldas Neeraj gave many evergreen songs to the industry, including ‘Phoolon Ke Rang Se, Dil Ki Kalam Se’ (Prem Pujari 1970), ‘Ae Bhai, Zara Dekhke Chalo, Aage Hi Nahi Peechey’ (Mera Naam Joker 1972) , ‘Bas Yehi Crime Me Every Time I Do’ (Pehchan 1971), ‘O Meri O Meri O Meri Sharmilee’ (Sharmilee 1971), ‘Rangeela Re Tere Rang Mein’ (Prem Pujari 1970), ‘Kaal Ka Pehiya Ghoome Bhaiya’ (Unknown 1970) ‘Likhe Jo Khat Tujhe’ (Kanyadaan 1968) is included.
Gopaldas Neeraj was a proud person, he was not fond of expensive things. However, it was the magic of his writing and beautiful tongue that from September 2004 to November 2004, he held Kavi Sammelan in about 20 cities of America. Neeraj’s artistry can be gauged from the fact that he wrote the hit song ‘Likhe Jo Khat Tujhe, Jo Teri Yaad Mein…’ in 1968 for Shashi Kapoor and Asha Parekh starrer film ‘Kanyadan’ in just six minutes. Neeraj, who started his career as a typist, later became a lyric writer. Gopaldas Neeraj was awarded the Filmfare Award thrice for Best Lyrics Writer. Neeraj gave about 200 best songs to Hindi cinema.
