Ex-BSF jawan, two others get life term in 2018 murder case in Deoria

Lucknow: A local court in Deoria on Saturday sentenced three persons, including a former BSF jawan, to life imprisonment in a 2018 murder case.

The victim, Anup Singh, was shot dead in the Barhaj police station area over political rivalry.

The three convicted are: former BSF jawan Anurag alias Chandan Singh (50), his younger brother Nandan Singh (47) and their accomplice Satyavan Singh (45).

Additional District and Sessions Judge Sanjay Kumar Singh also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on each.

“Investigation revealed that Anurag had committed the murder using his illegal weapon, a country-made pistol. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) recovered empty shells from the crime scene and the pistol from Anurag’s possession. A striation test confirmed that the pistol was used to kill Anup Singh. Eyewitness testimonies of villagers and scientific evidence played a crucial role in securing the conviction,” said superintendent of police, Deoria, Sankalp Sharma.

Station house officer Barjor Singh said Anurag had come to his hometown in Deoria on leave from his BSF posting in West Bengal.

On June 17, 2018, the three accused abducted Anup Singh from his home and shot him dead. The motive for the murder was Anup Singh’s decision to contest local elections against Anurag’s family’s wishes.

“Eight individuals were initially accused in the case, but five were acquitted due to lack of evidence. The police filed a charge sheet against the three remaining accused in November 2018 after obtaining forensic reports,” said the SHO.
