Ex-MLA Uday Bhan Singh gets 10-yr jail term

Lucknow: Mafia-turned-politician and former MLA from Aurai, Uday Bhan Singh alias Doctor Singh, was awarded 10-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 1 lakh in a case of Gangster Act by special judge (MP/MLA) Avaneesh Gautam on Wednesday.

The additional district government counsel (criminal), Vinay Kumar Singh said that Singh had been booked under Gangster Act in 2005 and police had filed its chargesheet in it in 2006. Charge was framed on Singh in 2018 and process of examining 11 witness was started in 2019, he said adding, with the completion of trial the court awarded 10 years imprisonment for Singh and fine of Rs one lakh. The court also ordered for six-month additional imprisonment if the fine is not given, he added.

Singh had come to limelight following his involvement in a triple murder case, in which Suryanarayan alias Vakil Shukla, Devishankar Dubey and Sheshmani Dubey were killed on April 4, 1999 at Gopiganj-Mirzapur intersection, had come to light. A case was registered against five people including him. He was absconding after the incident.

Singh appeared before the court in 2001 and later contested the Vidhan Sabha election from Aurai seat from jail in 2002 on a BSP ticket and was elected. In 2004, he lost his membership of the assembly after being sentenced to life imprisonment by the court of the district judge in the same triple murder case.
