France has made history by becoming the world’s first country to embed the right to abortion within its constitution.

In an extraordinary joint session of Parliament held at the Palace of Versailles, French lawmakers overwhelmingly approved the bill with a vote of 780-72. The moment was met with widespread celebration and applause, with nearly the entire joint session standing in solidarity.

The decision comes as a response to recent setbacks in abortion rights globally, particularly in the United States. Following a series of court rulings that rolled back abortion rights, President Emmanuel Macron pledged to enshrine the right to abortion in France’s fundamental law.
