Following the successful hosting of the G20 summit in September, incidents of theft and damage to decorations used during the event have been reported. Various items that adorned the venue for the grand two-day summit were either stolen or vandalized.
Complaints included missing flower pots, rubber nozzles, damaged wires, and broken lights, primarily in the New Delhi district area. These decorative items were installed by the Public Works Department and New Delhi Municipal Corporation as part of the beautification efforts for Bharat Mandapam and Lutyens’ Delhi.
Several decorative pots were stolen or damaged, some of which were lined up at ITO and Rajghat. Lights near Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg and Sarai Kale Khan flyover also suffered damage. It remains uncertain whether these incidents were intentional or accidental.
Street vendors and encroachments reappeared in the North Delhi area after being removed ahead of the G20 Summit. Similar situations were reported near Rajghat, India Gate, Turkman Gate, Kashmere Gate, and the Red Fort. While no FIRs were filed as the stolen items were relatively low in value, concerns have been raised by the Delhi Traffic Police about overcrowding near fountains located near India Gate and CP.
These incidents not only affect vehicular movement but also lead to property damage due to the gathering of people and littering in the same area. The Public Works Department had previously adjusted the fountain operation timings to address these issues.
