Goa Liberation Day: Indian Army had dismantled 450 years of Portuguese rule in just 36 hours


On December 17, Operation Vijay was initiated to liberate Goa. On December 19, the then Portuguese Governor, Menú Vaz de Silveira, signed a surrender agreement, formally handing over Goa to India. On May 30, 1987, Goa was conferred the status of a full-fledged state, marking its official integration as the 25th state of India.
