Government Expands Mandatory Gold Hallmarking to 55 New Districts in 17 States/Union Territories

The government has announced the commencement of the third phase of mandatory gold hallmarking for gold jewelry and artefacts in 55 additional districts across 16 states and one Union territory.

Gold hallmarking serves as a certification of the purity of the precious metal and was initially voluntary. However, as of June 16, 2021, the government opted for a phased implementation of mandatory gold hallmarking.

Presently, this requirement applies to a total of 343 districts. The first phase, initiated on June 23, 2021, encompassed 256 districts, while the second phase, starting on April 4, 2022, extended the mandate to an additional 32 districts.
