India made the announcement of expelling a Canadian diplomat on Tuesday, mere hours after Canada took a similar action by asking an Indian official to depart from its territory. Canada cited a “potential” Indian connection to the killing of a Khalistani separatist leader in June as the basis for its decision.
The Canadian High Commissioner to India was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), where they were formally informed about India’s decision to expel the senior Canadian diplomat.
In an official statement, the MEA expressed India’s increasing concerns over the “interference of Canadian diplomats in our internal matters and their involvement in anti-India activities.” The statement further indicated that the concerned diplomat has been given a five-day notice to leave India.
