India has reportedly requested Canada to withdraw approximately 40 diplomats from the country by October 10

due to deteriorating bilateral relations. If these diplomats are not withdrawn by the specified deadline, they risk losing their diplomatic immunity. Currently, there are over 60 Canadian diplomats stationed in India. This development follows Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations in Parliament that Indian intelligence agents may have been involved in the murder of Sikh pro-Khalistan hardliner Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which significantly strained diplomatic relations between the two nations. In response to these allegations, both countries had previously expelled a diplomat each. India had also characterized Canada’s accusations as politically motivated. Moreover, India emphasized the need for parity in the strength of diplomatic personnel, citing that Canada maintains a higher number of diplomats in India compared to the Indian presence in Canada. As a result, it is expected that Canada will reduce the number of its diplomats stationed in India in response to India’s request.
