Inevitable Fragmentation Without Global Institution Reform, Warns UN Secretary-General Guterres

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized on Thursday that without reforming in alignment with the requirements of the 21st century and acknowledging present-day power dynamics and economic realities, global institutions will witness an unavoidable fragmentation.

Speaking before the leaders of nearly 50 nations during the Africa Dialogue held on the fringes of the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, Guterres stressed the imperative of bolstering the multilateral framework, rooted in the UN Charter and international law.

“To ensure the enduring universality of multilateral institutions, a recalibration is essential, taking into account the contemporary distribution of power and economic circumstances. If such adaptations are not undertaken, a division within these institutions becomes an inevitable outcome,” remarked Guterres.
