The Italian comune of Monotone and Italian military historians have unveiled the “V.C. Yashwant Ghadge Sundial Memorial” in Monotone (Perugia, Italy), in honor of the Victoria Cross-winning hero Nike Yashwant Ghadge, who died in battle on the heights of the Upper Tiber Valley during the Italian campaign during World War II.

India’s Ambassador to Italy Dr. Nina Malhotra and Indian Defense Attache represented India during the ceremony. A large number of Italian citizens, distinguished guests and members of the Italian Armed Forces were also present on the occasion. Indian troops played a central role in the Italian campaign during World War II, comprising over 50,000 Indian Army soldiers from the 4th, 8th and 10th Divisions.
