In Kashmir this art is known as Chatikayam. Hundreds of artisans were associated with this art. But due to the increasing use of fake artefacts, most have given up this art.

The 700 years old art brought to Kashmir (Jannat) by Hazrat Shah-e-Hamdan (RA) is dying due to neglect and increasing use of imitations. The artisans are dejected due to low understanding of paper mache craft and lack of buyers. Most have distanced themselves from this historical artifact. But there are still some who are waiting for a change in the condition of the craft due to the changing Kashmir and increasing number of tourists.
