His career began by selling snacks and namkeens in Gorakhpur. He used to sell snacks on his Lambretta scooter under the name Jaya Products. In 1978, he laid the foundation of the Sahara Group in a small office in Gorakhpur. The group started with the establishment of textile and fan factories in the industrial area. Under Roy’s leadership, Sahara expanded into various businesses. In 1983, business associate S.K. Nath separated and established Rapti Finance. In the same year, Subrata Roy opened the company’s headquarters in Lucknow.
