Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has put a halt on the Delhi government’s new solar policy. Chief Minister Kejriwal had announced the new solar policy a few days ago in a press conference. He claimed that with the solar policy, Delhi’s electricity bills would become zero. The government had issued the new Solar Policy-2024 before this, after releasing the Solar Policy in 2016. Consumers in residential areas adopting the new policy will have zero electricity bills and will also receive additional income of Rs. 700 to Rs. 900. The expenses incurred in installing solar panels for consumers will be recovered within four years. The Chief Minister mentioned that the Solar Policy issued in 2016 was the most progressive policy in the country. Under the Solar Policy 2016, Delhi residents have installed solar panels with a capacity of nearly 250 megawatts on their rooftops so far. Additionally, under the Solar Policy 2016, DISCOMs have purchased 1250 megawatts of solar power from outside. Thus, nearly 1500 megawatts of solar power have been installed within Delhi under the Solar Policy 2016. He highlighted the features of the new policy, stating that those who install solar panels on their rooftops will have zero electricity bills. The electricity bills of consumers using 201 to 400 units of electricity will also be zero, and the bills of consumers using more than 400 units of electricity will also be zero. The Delhi government stated that consumers will have free electricity for 25 years after installing solar panels. He said that under this policy, the money invested by those purchasing solar panels will be recovered within four years because we have provided for various subsidies under this policy.
