Lucknow: A 23-year-old man drove his car — with his wife sitting inside — straight into the overflowing Ganga after a domestic strife, police in Amroha said on Friday. While his body was later recovered, his wife is still missing.
The incident occurred at Sikri Khadar village under Gajraula police limits on Thursday night. On the pretext of dropping his wife Nazia, 20, to her maternal place, Mohd Shane Alam suddenly turned the vehicle towards the river’s embankment. Alam’s body was recovered about 5km away from his village on Friday afternoon after a 15-hour search operation.
The woman is still missing, police said, adding that expert divers have been pressed into service. The vehicle is also yet to be traced.
Dhanaura circle officer, Arun Kumar, said, “Before leaving home, Alam’s father Mohd Sabir and his sister had tried to stop the car, but an angry Alam rammed the vehicle into both of them leaving them seriously injured. They have been admitted to hospital for treatment.”
Kumar added: “Alam and Nazia got married four months ago. There were family issues and the police are probing all of it… Strong river current of the swelling Ganga is making the search operation difficult.”
