Man held for impersonation in UP police constable exam

Over 244 arrested across the state

Lucknow: In a tale reminiscent of the popular film Munna Bhai MBBS, where impersonation at the MMBS entrance exam takes centre stage, a real-life drama unfolded during the Uttar Pradesh Police constable exam in Noida on Sunday.

A 19-year-old man was arrested for allegedly posing as a candidate at an examination centre in a Sector 7 school. The original candidate has also been taken into custody.

However, unlike the silver screen’s comedic twists, this incident carries a different undertone.

The accused, Badal Chaudhary, claimed that he allegedly agreed to take the test for the candidate, Harishpal Atri (26), after his brother, Akash, promised Rs 5 lakh for cracking the written exam.

Chaudhary had already received an advance of Rs 1.20 lakh — Rs 20,000 and Rs 99,999 — in two installments earlier this February, said Phase 3 station house officer Vijay Kumar, who added that both Chaudhary and Atri are residents of Jewar in Greater Noida.

“On Sunday, Chaudhary allegedly managed to enter the examination room with forged Aadhar and admit cards. He had begun answering questions when officials came to reverify his identity and caught him”, said Kumar.

During interrogation, Chaudhary admitted to changing the photograph on Atri’s Aadhaar card to be allowed to enter the examination centre, while Atri waited outside.

Phase 3 police have registered a case against both Atri and Chaudhary under sections 419 (punishment for cheating by personation), 420, (cheating and dishonesty), 467 (forging a document which purports to be valuable security or a will), 468 (forgery), and 471 (fraudulently or dishonestly using as genuine any document) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as relevant provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Public Examinations Act.
