Man hits son with spade for demanding booze money, arrested

Arrested 6 d 16

Lucknow: A 55-year-old man was arrested on Sunday, a day after he killed his 27-year-old son by striking him with a spade for allegedly demanding Rs 1,000 to buy alcohol. The victim, Chhotka, was found dead at their residence in Nariyal Tola village in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur district.

“Late Saturday, locals heard a commotion followed by a shriek at Lalji Verma’s house and rushed there to find Chhotka lying in a pool of blood, while his father held a spade,” Tambor SHO Suresh Patel said.

A resident informed cops and a police team reached the spot and took Lalji into custody. The spade was recovered and sent for forensic examination.

In his statement to the police, Lalji said Chhotka had become a drug addict and used to seek money for drugs and liquor. “Initially, we thought that he would mend his ways and stop taking these psychotropic substances and alcohol. Last month, we took him to a rehab centre, but it had no impact on him,” Lalji said.

Citing the sequence of events, Lalji said that Chhotka came home drunk and became violent when he was denied Rs 1,000 for buying liquor. “I lost my cool and picked up a spade and hit him five times. I have no remorse,” he added.
