Lucknow: A 30-year-old man took his own life on Thursday night, allegedly distressed by the persistent abuse, humiliation, and physical assaults inflicted upon him in the presence of his wife by his landlord. Following a formal complaint by the victim’s father, police booked one person on Friday evening. The deceased’s body has been sent for autopsy and an investigation is underway, cops said.
Hariom Mishra, father of the victim, Rachit Mishra, said that his son owed two months’ house rent, totalling Rs 4,000, to his landlord, Devendra Kumar. Rachit, along with his wife and their five-year-old son, resided in Pilibhit city and had been employed at a private institution in Bareilly. However, he lost his job approximately two months ago, his father added.
The loss of employment had plunged Rachit into a financial crisis, making it difficult for him to meet his rent obligations on time. On Thursday, when the landlord approached him for the overdue rent, it was alleged that Rachit, unable to comply, was subjected to verbal abuse and physical violence in front of his wife.
Naresh Kumar Tyagi, station house officer (SHO), Pilibhit Kotwali police station, said, “Devendra Kumar has been charged under IPC section 306 (abetment to suicide). Though the accused has been evading arrest since the FIR was filed against him, he will be arrested soon.”
